‘…the company’s rich characterisation and skilful harmonising allowed them to transcend their stuffy confines and show us that opera is still something very much alive…’ (Buzz Magazine Feb 2011)

Who Are We?

Winners of the Welsh Future Entrepreneur Awards, Opera’r Ddraig (Dragon Opera) is a not-for-profit opera company based in Cardiff, committed to providing a professional platform for young opera enthusiasts. It is a company run for young people by young people. Since its creation in 2009 the company has flourished. The company has attracted cast members from throughout the UK. In previous years we have staged Mozart’s The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro at The Gate Theatre, Cardiff, to high critical acclaim.

Opera’r Ddraig provides opportunities for young singers, directors, conductors, stage managers, costume and lighting designers, musicians and arts administrators to gain valuable experience in the world of staging a professional opera. The company provides valuable collaboration with professional companies and individuals in the form of free private coaching, master classes, lectures and informal feedback and our performances act as a ‘shop window’ for the performers to present their talent and potential to influential people. The skills that these young people learn are invaluable to their later careers. Opera’r Ddraig has a current policy of double casting our productions where possible so as to provide as many performing opportunities as possible for our singers.
